The two terms essentially refer to the same person, a person who is primarily engaged in improving the appearance of walls and other surfaces by applying paint to them. Though concrete walls form the majority of surfaces painted on a painter can be called upon to work on metals, wood, fibreglass etc. Apart from decorative reasons, surfaces can be painted to protect them from stains, moulding, rust, and corrosion by water. While painters primarily are only involved with painting, some will also do the plastering as part of preparation of the wall for the application of paint.
Preparation of the surface for painting forms a significant portion of a painter’s work. Ordinarily it would involve scraping of the surface to remove old or peeling paint using a paint scraper as the first step. Next, holes and cracks must be filled. This entails using caulking or filler to seal to fill nail holes and any other holes that can cause seepage of water underneath the film of paint and thus lead to peeling. The painter will then sand wall the wall using the right type of sandpaper to make it as smooth and level as possible. Cleaning of the wall with mild soap solution to remove dust particles and the application of a coat of primer are usually the final steps of this process.
Professional decorators will use either paintbrushes, rollers or spray guns to apply the paint. The nature of the job will determine which size of brush or roller to be used but generally, wide brushes are used to cover large areas and smaller ones used to paint the edges of the wall. Rollers are preferred when whitewashing exterior walls. However, these days painters faced with huge walls would rather use an airless spray gun as it will enable them to get the job done in a relatively short time. Other than regular painting, today’s painter is expected to be conversant with faux painting techniques. These techniques enable the decorator to achieve the textures and patterns of natural materials such as stone, leather and marble using just paint and glaze.
