Italy in Your Room
Written by Ray Munn LtdHave you ever had one of those moments where you just wish you could be in Tuscany or Naples or Rome?
Surely, a lot of people spend hours daydreaming about being in Italy, instead of waiting in line, typing away on the office computer, or balancing their check book. Well, here is a super easy project to help ease those pangs. Why not bring a piece of Italy in your own bedroom by using polished plaster?
Polished plaster is simply an updated form of the plaster you’re most probably familiar with. Basically, it is a form of decorative plaster and it has various kinds depending on its finish. Ray Munn Ltd. carries different brands, colours and finishes of polished plaster, like Immagini and Marmorino. Simply choose from the online shop or visit one of our stores and see the colour in real life.
While most people would think twice about using plaster because it is quite a bit labour intensive, the effects achieved by plaster are quite spectacular, definitely worth all that labour. Just think of it as a form of arm exercise. You can also enlist the help of your family members and some friends, which would be a great way to bring your family and friends together. So, if you are looking for a way to spruce up your bedroom, think of Italy and use polished plaster.
It is a great way to bring warmth into your bedroom, yet keeping the atmosphere modern and inviting. Obviously, the whole feel of your room depends on the colour and finish you choose. Warm colours, like beige, tan, or even orange, are definitely reminiscent of Italy. The finish should also be rough, the way old houses in Tuscany look like. If you think that just the introduction alone already seems laborious, pause for a while and consider simply doing one side of the room. Just choose one wall and make it the feature wall. Now, it is just a quarter of the work you have to do. Creating a feature wall will also serve as a preview of how your room will look like and help you decide whether to paint your entire room or just keep the feature wall.
Usually, polished plaster is applied in two to four layers using a stainless steel trowel (some people call it spatula). If you think about it, applying the plaster is just like spreading butter on your walls, only you have to do it two to four times to create your desired effect. Most people are fine with just two coats of polished plaster and use the trowel to create texture to finish the work. There are various techniques in applying plaster, too, depending on the finish or texture. Some of these techniques also have Japanese names, like Kyoto (usual rough texture), Fukue (stripes) and Osaka, where the base coat has a different colour from the second coat.
Whatever colour, technique, finish or country you choose, polished plaster is definitely a great way to bring some colour and life into your bedroom.
