Saving on your paint job: some tips
Written by Ray Munn LtdIf you didn’t know, this is why many home owners do their own decorating.
Doing your own painting empowers you to get the exact outcome you envisioned. But more than this, you save plenty of money on contractor charges.
Depending on who you hire, you can end up spending over £300 per room whereas you could have spent less than a tenth of that if you did it yourself. And it doesn’t take much to improve your competence as a painter. If you are completely green in matters DIY, all you need is to find some painting instructions on YouTube and find a board or any other such surface on which you can do some practice.
Calculating the amount of paint you need to complete your paint job in advance will save you money as you avoid ending up with tins of unused paint. Time and fuel wasted going to the paint shop to purchase more paint because you ran out in the middle of the job is another extra cost you can avoid this way. And it is not rocket science. Simply get the length and width of the walls of the rooms to be painted and multiply these dimensions to get the square area. Subtract the square area of windows and other areas that will not be painted on from this figure. Once you have located the type of paint you will use, read the spread rate indicated on the tin. The spread rate is the number of square feet a gallon of paint will cover. Divide this by the area to be painted to get the number of gallons needed and this will enable you to determine the number of tins you will need.
Bargain hunting has never been a bad idea and when it comes to purchasing your painting materials, you should also take time to look for the most reasonable prices. The Internet brings information that will enable you easily make price comparisons and find sales and discounts right to your doorstep. With newsletter marketing, online paint material vendors will send you such notifications on email if you so wish. However, do not compromise quality in the quest for lower prices. Ensure you buy reputable brands for a durable job. Cheap is expensive.
There are also some painting tools and materials you don’t have to buy. Instead of buying drop cloth, why don’t you use old blankets or newspapers? However, these may be a bit more slippery underfoot and may also absorb drops of paint. Taking good care of your brushes and rollers will allow you to reuse them over and over, saving you the cost of buying a new set every time you want to paint. Wash your brushes thoroughly immediately after use and let them dry completely before storing them.
Taking care of your painted walls so that you won’t need a fresh coat anytime soon is another way you can save. After application of the paint, you can apply a layer of ProtectGuard, a line of products from Guard Industrie made to protect both interior and exterior walls from stains and penetration of water which causes peeling of the paint over time.
