Decorating your Home - Say It with Pink
Written by Ray Munn LtdWith the Valentine’s season at hand, pink will begin to dominate everything around us as the symbols of love are exchanged.
But now that pink in all its shades will be coming to the fore, why not think about decorating your home with it and make the spirit of Valentine’s day last throughout the year? Bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms and even gazebos can benefit from the soft vivacity that pink adorns on the areas it is used. Far from being just a girl’s favourite, it is a colour that generates warmth and excitement, yet at the same time gives a sense of tranquillity.
An obvious choice for pink is the girl’s bedroom. With few exceptions, this is the colour that girls are drawn to first as soon as they can perceive colour. Combine it with flowery shapes and you are sure to captivate your daughter’s heart. Patterned wallpaper is a simple way of achieving this. Choose a pretty pattern that cleverly incorporates pink and other colours to create a playful feel. Alternatively you can take it upon yourself to paint the room. Select a wall to make the accent wall and use a bold shade of pink to paint it. You can then hang a painting or your daughter’s own works of art on it. You can also give the entire room, apart from the ceiling a light shade of pink and keep it interesting with a variety of trinkets (include lots of dolls and stuffed animals) and pieces of art.
Here’s another way you can spice up your little princess’s room using her favourite colour: have pink beaded curtains instead of the usual cotton. The raindrop or bubble shaped beads should keep her and her visiting friends fascinated for years to come.
How about your living room? A muted version of pink would go perfectly with either orange or marigold and white. Paint the walls plain white and bring in couches with intricate pink flower patterns complete with pink and gold cushions. Consistency is key, so make sure the pink-and-gold theme permeates the entire room. The curtains should contain similar colours as should lampshades, paintings and other decorative items. Deep pink couches are an interesting option but need to be carefully balanced out with other lighter colours so as to avoid giving the room a clattered feel. You can also give your living room that subtle warmth that pink exudes by covering its walls in patterned pink wallpaper. Critics of wallpaper will tell you that it will shrink the room by making it appear too busy, but if you have a spacious room, why not experiment?
And did you know pink can bring a delicate sophistication to your dining room? Paint its walls a soft pink and bring in well finished wooden china cabinets. But don’t stop there. Give the tabletop a gleaming film of pink and the seats some lovely embroidered pink cushions. Combine this with blue or green vases and framed paintings that are not too distractive et voila!
