Your Painting Project Checklist
Written by Ray Munn LtdIt is important to make painting project checklist before you start your painting project.
Appropriate Paint
Of course, since you will be tackling a painting project, it is important to know the appropriate kind of paint that you need according to several factors. First, the surface that you will be painting. Is it made of wood? Cement? Ceramics or porcelain? It is important to get the right kind of paint that matches the surface you will be working on to make sure that you get the most out of your money and you need not worry about paint easily chipping or even damaging the surface. Second, determine the kind of finish that you want. Do you want a high gloss finish? Semi gloss? Or a matte finish to cut some glare, especially in sunny areas? The gloss intensity of the paint you choose will greatly affect the appearance of the piece you are working on. Matte finished paints may highlight or emphasize some scratches or nicks on the piece you painted, while a high gloss finish can very well hide these imperfections. Third, consider the VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) rating of the paint. This determines if the paint is environmental friendly and safe to use indoors and outdoors. It also tells you that the process of making manufacturing the paint is also environmental friendly. The rule of thumb is: the lower the VOC percentage value, the better. Consider using Eicò paints, which has the lowest VOC rating out of the major paint brands in the UK.
Sealant and/or Primer
Some surfaces need a coat of primer before applying the base coat in order to protect the material from the paint and elements. This is most true when working with a wooden surface and wood pieces. The primer will prepare the wood and preserve it. In most cases, it will prevent termite infestation an even help make the wood fire proof. Remember that before applying the first coat of paint, let the primer dry completely first. While a primer is applied before painting, a sealant is the last coating you apply. The sealant will protect the paint job so that it will not get damaged, worn out or scraped off easily. A coat or two will help prolong the life of your paint job.
Painting Supplied
Painting supplied such as an airbrush / paint brush / paint roller, a paint tray (especially if you are working with a paint roller), painter’s tape, tarp (which could be plastic, paper, or cloth), and colour swatches. You may also want to consider having a small bucket or jar/can with water to dip your paint brush into during painting breaks, or when you decide to continue painting tomorrow. Although it is always best to completely wash the paint brush after use. You can also wrap a wet rag around your paint brush to keep it from hardening while you are taking a break.
