Many people prefer to decorate their kitchens with tiles because of a variety of reasons: they are quite stain resistant and they are easy to clean.

These qualities are important as the process of food preparation many a time splashes the walls and floor with multi-coloured stains. Paint produces a strong smell during application, a smell which can affect your health, depending on which kind of paint is used. Tiles give no such discomfort. In terms of aesthetics, some prefer the many designs and patterns tiles come in to a plain coat of paint.

There is quite a variety of tiles you can choose from if you choose to tile, and perhaps that’s another reason many would rather have tiles than a paint job. The most used kind are ceramic tiles. Their smooth, glossy surface is pleasing to the eye, particularly when in the right colour or design. Ceramic tiles are also known to be very durable. We also have stone tiles, marble tiles being one of the most used kind of stone tile. Marble can be quite expensive and fragile as opposed to natural stone, which ages much more gracefully, though it doesn’t have the glossy appeal of marble.

Glass tiles are a great option due to their aesthetic beauty and the fact that they are easy to clean. However, like marble, they can be rather costly. Porcelain tiles are a cheaper option and are additionally easy to maintain. When it comes to the actual fitting of the tiles, here are a few things you need to remember: first, ensure the surface- floor or wall- is properly prepared. Make sure the surface is as clean and smooth as possible. Remove old tiles, scrape off any bumps and chipping paint and sand with the right grit sandpaper. Purchase the right number of tiles to finish the job, ensuring you have a good number of excess tiles to cater for those that may break in the process. If you are not sure about your ability to lay the tiles, it is best you leave the task to professionals. And make sure you are sure of the reputation of the tilers before awarding them the job.
